 Wonny Song Appointed Artistic Director of the Orford Arts Centre

Orford, March 17, 2015 – Nicole Fontaine, President of the Board of Directors of the Orford Arts Centre announced today that Wonny Song has been appointed Artistic Director of the Orford Arts Centre. Mr. Song will officially assume his position at the beginning of summer 2015, at which time he will begin to prepare the 2016 program. “The members of the Board are very pleased that Mr. Song has agreed to assume responsibility of our organization’s artistic direction, and they wish him great success in his new position,” said Ms. Fontaine.

Wonny Song stated, “It’s a tremendous honour to be part of the Orford family, and I am pleased to be planning a musical program adapted to this magnificent location. It gives me great pride to take on the challenge of moving forward with the Orford Arts Centre’s mission, and promoting the excellence of the Orford Festival and Academy. I also look forward to continuing to promote the Orford Arts Centre in the international arena.

Executive Director François Tétreault added, “The Orford Arts Centre is proud to welcome Wonny Song, an internationally renowned musician and exceptional cultural manager, who will continue to pursue the Orford Arts Centre’s mission while bringing to it a new and innovative vision. On behalf of the entire team at the Orford Arts Centre, I would like to assure him of our full support and confidence as he carries out his mandate.”

Maestro Jean-François Rivest will remain at the helm of the 2015 edition of the Orford Festival and the Orford Academy.

About Wonny Song

Winner of the 2010 Canadian Musician Award, Korean-born Canadian pianist Wonny Song is, according to the Washington Post, “a versatile, intelligent and remarkably musical pianist.” An accomplished musician, he is widely praised for his wonderfully poetic touch, depth of musical insight and charismatic personality, and is recognized internationally for his performances in recitals and with orchestras across North America, Europe and the Far East.

He has played with the Cincinnati Symphony, the Montreal Symphony, the Toronto Symphony, the National Arts Centre Orchestra, the Euro Asian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Santa Barbara Orchestra, the McGill Chamber Orchestra, the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra, the Suwon Philharmonic Orchestra in Korea, l’Orchestre Métropolitain du Grand Montréal, the Orchestra of St-Luke’s and I Musici de Montréal, under the direction of such esteemed conductors as Michael Stern, Jesus Amigo, Keith Lockhart, Alexander Brott, Yuli Turovsky, Peter Gunde, Maximiano Valdes, Eiji Oue and Gum Nan Sae.

Mr. Song has given recitals in France, Italy, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, South Korea, Japan and the United States. In the United States, he has performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (NY), St. Vincent College (PA), Missouri State University, the JCC of Greater Washington and the Buffalo Chamber Music Society.

Mr. Song was awarded the 2003 Prix d’Europe in Canada, which presented him in recital both at home and abroad, in Canada, France, Italy, and Sweden. In 2001, he was First and Grand Prize winner of the Minnesota Orchestra’s WAMSO Competition. He won the 1997 Ludmila Knezkova Piano Competition in New Brunswick, as well as First Prize and Best Artistic Interpretation Prize at the 1995 Montreal Symphony Piano Competition and a Gold Medal at the 1994 World Piano Competition in Cincinnati.
